What is it?

A Google gadget showing all active tropical weather systems: hurricanes, typhoons, tropical storms, etc. The strongest system is selected by default, but if there's more than one system shown, simply click on each to shift the view there. The viewer itself uses Google's excellent Maps API, and thus is fully interactive, supporting dragging and zooming.

If you're interested in keeping an eye on hurricanes, you can add the gadget to your own iGoogle home page, or to any other web page you might make. When you do so, you'll have the option of selecting which areas of the world you want to view, as well as switching the wind speed display between MPH and km/h.

Background

This gadget uses an RSS feed from Weather Underground to display a localized Google Map, with my own Clouds overlay, for each hurricane.

Although previous DaylightMap efforts are frequently called "mashups" (and have even won awards as such), I consider this my first true mashup. It's built entirely from pre-existing services (WUnderground, Clouds, GMaps), with essentially no original work on my part, just a bit of JavaScript and CSS in the gadget to glue them together.

Enjoy!
