  • Don’t Be Fooled... Virtual Training Can Drive Sales Skills +

    dartThere is a myth that you can’t learn “soft skills” in a virtual environment. Many hold the belief that you have to be there in person to practice those skills. It’s like when people said there would never be a sub four-minute mile or when it was thought that the computer would never have a personal use. It was true until it wasn’t. My experience in the virtual classroom says you can learn and practice soft skills. Let’s break it down.

    The typical in-person (ILT) sales class lasts two days, with air travel and hotel stays. The participants lose half of a day for travel each way for a total of three days away from customers. During their two days in class, they learn and practice important and relevant content. They return to the office and try to apply all that they have learned over the two days. This is the traditional model that we all know very well.

    Now let's look at a virtual model (vILT). There is no standard for converting two days of face-to-face content to virtual content. The ranges are from – three to six sessions of 60 minutes to 2.5 hours. You may see classes longer than 2.5 hours. However, in my opinion, for every 30 minutes over two hours, you start to lose a little bit of the focus and energy from the participants.

    bunny slippersWe’re a virtual team at evoke. All of us traverse three time zones and more on a daily basis. As the pro’s, we must excel at managing virtual team communication. Most days that’s true. But there are definitely days when we struggle.

    As the West coast member of the team, on occasion it can be challenging getting in sync with my Central and East coast time zone partners. For some of our meetings, I’m just getting my day going when they have already been pedal-to-the-floor for hours. What can happen? Project needs that have been developing during the three hours I’ve been asleep have become the significant focus for my East coast brethren. A team meeting at 8:00 am Pacific can feel a little like having your treadmill bumped up to 10 miles per hour before your first cup of coffee!

    You’ve probably experienced the same thing at some point.  Working on or with a dispersed team is the norm now. One of the biggest issues we hear from our clients about virtual teams is the challenge of time zones when trying to connect or work with non-local teammates.
